Background |
Yassen grew up on Trillus Prime with the straightforward aim of becoming a joined Trill. His choice to join Starfleet Academy as a teenager was primarily motivated by this; receiving training in all sorts of disciplines could, surely, only improve his chances of being selected to be joined to a symbiote. During his studies, however, he came to enjoy the courses he studied and the environment of Starfleet, leading him to apply for a permanent position as a Science Officer upon his graduation at twenty-one years old. His determination to do it all, and certainty that he could perform every role he took on to perfection, led Yassen to burn out entirely on the final assessment of his selection procedure at twenty-four years old. The field docent he was assigned to (correctly) identified that he would be better off putting his efforts into being a well-rounded individual, rather than a poor half of everything. Yassen was bitter about this for several months, and remains insecure about the assessment to this day, throwing himself into his work as a Starfleet Science Officer to compensate for his 'failure'. He hopes that his assignment to the USS Vanguard will give him the opportunity to prove his potential.

Personality Profile |
Yassen is driven and passionate, needing little direction to apply himself to whatever task is at hand with determined vigour. He is outgoing and warm, but can tip into being overbearing at times. He retains information well, and is above average intelligence. Yassen is self-important and image-conscious, and hates admitting when things don't go his way; for example, he would never admit to anyone that he ultimately failed to be selected for joining after all the work he put into it, as obvious as the fact is to everyone else, and would vehemently protest that he deliberately 'threw' his assessment if asked. He is fundamentally insecure, and overcompensates for this by projecting an image of confidence, even when he has very little reason to be self-assured.
